How we predict.
We don't ask you to trust us — we show our work. Here's exactly how CounselR turns a rank into a chance band, using official closing ranks only. We show you the gap honestly, so you can order your list rather than guess it.
How the bands work
We compare your rank to each seat's most recent official closing rank — the one we hold for the latest year, at its widest (final) round. The bigger the gap, the tougher the band. Five plain-language bands, no false precision:
How to read these bands
We compare your rank to the last closing rank we hold for each seat. Strong — you would have made it last year. Very Good / Good — you were just short; cut-offs move each year and widen in later rounds, so these are live options worth listing. Tough / Very Tough — a bigger gap, but students do get in when cut-offs loosen. We show the gap honestly so you can order your list, not guess it.
We're transparent about what this is: a clear, explainable read based on official closing ranks — not a black-box percentage model. These band thresholds are our own honest judgement about how big a gap is worth listing; they are not derived from past outcomes or hit rates, and we deliberately never show a fake probability like "73.4% chance". A true multi-year probability model is on our roadmap; until it exists and is validated, we won't claim one.
Our data & sources
Every figure on CounselR carries its official source and year. We use official records only — never aggregators (Shiksha, Careers360, Collegedunia and the like).

What to keep in mind
- Closing ranks move every year with difficulty, seat changes and demand — and they widen in later rounds. Past data guides, it doesn't guarantee.
- Your category, quota and home state change everything — always check with your exact details.
- We show the latest official data we hold; where we don't have a college's data, we say "not available" rather than guess.
- Predictions are guidance to help you build a smart choice list — not a promise of admission.
